Custom Axles 930 CVs
From VanagonWiki
I became interested in these axles after I destroyed an axle and CV joint,...like many others....at Syncro de Mayo in Hollister.
These custom made axles (mine were made by Mastercraft Motors in Santa Barbara) come with a stronger, larger diameter axle, and
also come equiped with bigger, stronger, Porsche 930 CV joints at both ends of the rear axle. The front axles have the 930 inner CVs and (very hard to get) Syncro 16 outer CVs. They are expensive, at about $1800 per set. They provide the benefits of both a stronger axle and a stronger CV joint. Additionally the Porsche CVs allow a greater angle of articulation, supposedly allowing the wheels to drop to a greater angle, although, ultimately the angle is limited by the control arm attachments.
There is some debate about upgrading to these stronger axles and CV joints. While certainly providing insurance against getting stuck with a broken axle when offroading, some Syncronauts feel that axles are a somewhat easy trailside repair and they'd rather have the weak link in the drive
train be an axle than something inside the tranny. Eric Abercrombie of Santa Barbara has used these axles, together with other custom suspension components, like modified control arms and special shocks, and is a proponent of using them. I have a set of these axles but have not yet installed them, so I can't yet report on their use. (Warren Chapman)
