Vanagon Storage Space tips
Four areas in the Vanagon Westie where you can create more storage space.
1. The cabinet where the sink drain hose down through the floor, remove the bottom step board. Get a new drain hose to re rout along inner side wall. Trim down the bottom step board on each side just enough to shorten it to approx. 3” and reinstall over drain hose. You now have more space for taller items to fit it that area.
2. The small door next to the 110 ac outlet plug. Inside the little area the wall to the left is installed on an angle. Wide in the front and narrow in the back. You can make this wall straight and get more usable storage area here. Open the lid above the storage space and remove the access bottom board, it just lays in there. Now see how off angle the side left side wall is? You can re adjust it and align it so that it’s straight in. Also did you notice the little area behind the wall? This space can be used as well but for very small objects.
3. The storage bin where the water tank large cap-lid is. This is where the flat metal plate is. Take the metalStor lid off. Notice about 2 inches of open area between the bottom of bin and the top of the water tank. What you want to do here is cut the bottom storage board out. Take a strong razor box knife and cut the bottom board from the storage box walls. You can leave it out or reattach the lower storage bin bottom on top of the water tank. I reattached mine back with rtv sealant and strips of plastic L brackets to hold the bottom board and to seal the bottom box back up to the inner box walls. This area really opens up a bigger area to store things.
4. Under the rear seat storage is the heater in an enclosed wooden box. The vanagon’s jack is placed diagonally in the box wasting space. If you cut a small 45 degree notch out of the side of wooden heater box back side corner you can place the vanagon’s jack straight across the back of the storage box. This will give you more space in the box under the rear seat.
